Introduction
"For me ideas are much more important than attempting to produce a visual identity based on self. My pictures are derived from the spirit of place and the memory of observed locations, incidents, people, with their architecture and landscape. My use of landscape is also rooted in metaphor; the landscape of the mind, my mind, where emotion, feeling, sensation, sense of time, memories, demands my attention. A recent series was named, Landscape Capriccios, ongoing since 1974 is Made from Wales; the theme of travel is constant: for example to Italy, Greece, France, Spain, USA. The most recent series is an examination of the cultural idea of ‘The North’, which takes the form of a journey made in the mind, from Wales, via my homeland of North Scotland to polar regions titled: North by North West. Ideas are always related to the use of specific techniques which include drawing and painting, printmaking, photography; they can be abstract or representational, occasionally the figure wanders in. (I value the freedom bestowed on us by Paul Klee.) This art practice runs along side my art history publications, independent curated exhibitions and as a writer and performer of autobiographical stories. Art history publications have mostly been concerned with the nature of photography, invitations include Mario Giacomelli for Phaidon Press (London 2000, 2006, Paris 2003, 2005) and from Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna to curate, design and write the exhibition and monograph Erich Lessing. Reportage Photography 1948-73 (Vienna 2002, Paris 2003, USA 2005). Some time ago I remember being labelled ‘post-modern’, (years before that I was called ‘derivative’), recently, I have been told that I am a ‘transposition’, sometimes I would prefer to be called a ‘poet’."
