Stuart Evans

Stuart Evans is an artist from Borth, Ceredigion who works at Ceredigion Museum, Aberystwyth as a designer and technician. He has been inspired by the mid Wales landscape to produce lino cut images which reflect the wild and wonderful land in which he grew up and often walks into. His works also include images that he has produced after travelling to other countries such as Africa and America.

Stuart describes his work as being produced through a very basic printing technique. ‘Lino cuts are probably the first technique you learn as a printer, most school children have a go at it. Over the years I have worked on a number of series, including the ones of historic ships which were used by the Ceredigion Museum in Aberystwyth for postcard images. I was inspired by the museum collection of paintings and by the long history of seafaring in Ceredigion. Many stories and adventures help to inspire such work and I wanted to create something that would make people aware of the importance of shipping to the people of this area. What is really good to think is that the original boats built along the coast here travelled the world, and now my prints of them do the same thing, all those years after.’

Some of his images are of slate works in Vermont and these were produced after Stuart and his wife Jenny went over to Poultney in Vermont USA as part of a Welsh Heritage celebration in 2000. Stuart explains the Welsh link with this area, ‘Many Welsh Slate workers went to work over in America in the nineteenth century. The Poultney area has a large quantity of green slate which is mined on the surface of the land. We were invited over by Green Mountain College and taught the students on the art studies course at the college as well as taking part in the Welsh Heritage weekend. It was such a surprise to hear a male voice choir from Toronto singing in Welsh. I could understand all the words too, their pronunciation was perfect. There were Welsh plays performed and even a rugby match.’

Other works include images inspired by a trip to Africa. There are a number of decorative pieces which relate to the work that goes on in the west African country of Gambia. Stuart adds, ‘Years ago while working in the museum I remember opening a number of sea charts that were donated from a house in Aberaeron. The charts were of the coastal area of west Africa. As I unfolded the charts there was a strong smell of spice that came from them. It was so evocative and exotic. One of the ships that I made a lino cut of was a vessel which sailed from Aberaeron called Gambia. There is a house there too with that name. I really wanted to go to Africa for a holiday and to see what it was like for myself. It was such a colourful place and so full of beautiful carvings and textiles. The prints I made on returning to Wales include some of that exoticism.’

They are not limited editions as Stuart hand painted the colour with water colour paint and does not produce identical images, each one is unique.
