Chris Webster

Through my work I am attempting to become a curator of the lost both in terms of found visual imagery and the use of such images as actors upon a stage where I can re-enact fragments of dreams, memories, visions and the transformation of the ordinary into the extraordinary. I think of photographs not as ‘slices of life’ but presages of death. Indeed as Roland Barthes suggested, “it is not (it seems to me) by Painting that Photography touches art, but by Theater…. Photography is a kind of primitive theatre, a kind of Tableau Vivant, a figuration of the motionless and made-up face beneath which we see the dead.”[1] The images that I make are created as a response to ideas that arise from a source that is in itself unexplainable to me.
